About this community

The San Diego startup community, properly connected.

San Diego's startup ecosystem is one of the most underrated in the country. The biotech corridor in Sorrento Valley anchors a substantial life-sciences startup community. The tech and SaaS scene clustered in Carmel Valley and Solana Beach has produced multiple unicorns in the past decade. Our startup networking san diego services ensure Consumer-product startups thrive in the city's North County corridor. Hardware and defense-adjacent startups operate quietly across the county. The pieces are there. What's been missing — and what Cufflinks SD has worked to fill since 2014 — is the cross-community connective tissue.

Most startup networking events in San Diego are vertical: biotech-only at Biocom, tech-only at the various accelerator demo days, consumer-only at retail trade shows. That siloing has historically meant a biotech founder rarely meets a SaaS founder, a consumer founder rarely meets a defense-tech founder, and the cross-pollination that produces unexpected partnerships and learning happens less often than it could. Learn more about our startup networking san diego offerings.

Cufflinks SD's startup programming deliberately mixes verticals. Our quarterly Founder Summit brings together 60-90 founders across all sectors. Our monthly Founder Dinners (10-12 seats each) seat founders from different sectors at the same table. Our annual Capital Summit connects founders with the active VCs, family offices, and angels in San Diego. The result is a startup community that benefits from cross-vertical exposure — and a network that's helped many of our founder members find unexpected co-founders, hires, customers, and capital.

Why Cufflinks SD

What we do differently.

01

Curated Rooms

Every guest list is reviewed. We protect the room — that's why decision-makers keep coming back. Quality over headcount.

02

Real Introductions

Beyond the mixer — our team makes warm intros, hosts industry roundtables, and runs the directory. Networking is the start, not the whole product.

03

San Diego Focused

Built in San Diego, for San Diego. Downtown, La Jolla, Del Mar, Coronado, Carmel Valley. We know the venues, the people, the rhythm of the city.

Deep dive

What we run for founders

Founder Summit (Quarterly). Half-day format, 60-90 attendees, all-founder room. Format: two founder-led keynotes (someone in the community at a meaningful inflection — fundraise, exit, scale), three peer roundtables on shared challenges (hiring, fundraising, product-market fit), a 'dealflow' segment where founders pitch their current ask in 60 seconds, and a closing reception. Members included; non-member founders apply.

Founder Dinners (Monthly). 10-12 seats, by invitation, at a private home or chef's table. We seat founders deliberately — different verticals, different stages, different challenges. The dinner format produces deeper relationships than any other format we run; many of our most-cited founder-to-founder partnerships started at these dinners.

Capital Summit (Annual). Founders meet capital. 80-120 attendees split roughly 60-40 between founders and investors. Investors include the active San Diego VCs (TVC, Cove, Trail Mix Ventures, Western Technology Investment, others), the institutional family offices, and the active angel community. Format: short panel from active investors on what they're funding, a 'speed-meet' segment for founders to do 7-minute introductions with investors who've expressed interest, then open networking. The most direct path from networking to capital that we offer.

Founder Office Hours. Weekly virtual office hours where founders can book 20-minute slots with operators in the community for specific advice. Not capital-focused; operations-focused. Hiring, GTM, contract, product, ops. Roughly 200-300 office hours sessions completed per year.

Annual Founder Retreat. A weekend retreat in Coronado or Carlsbad each fall. 30-40 founders, all-in for 36 hours. Workshops, peer roundtables, social events, and the kind of deeper conversations that don't happen in a three-hour mixer. Members-only.

Office Space Network. Many of our founder members have flex office space, conference rooms, and event space they make available to other members at low or no cost. The Office Space Network is an internal directory of those resources — useful for early-stage founders without formal offices, founders hosting investor meetings, and founders coordinating off-site team days.

How San Diego's startup ecosystem is changing

A few patterns we've watched develop over the past five years that shape how startup networking happens in San Diego specifically. One: biotech and tech are converging — bioinformatics, AI in life sciences, and the application of software to clinical workflows have produced founders who fit neither pure-biotech nor pure-tech communities. Our cross-vertical events serve them well. Two: consumer-product founders have grown substantially as a community, often anchored in North County, often DTC and digitally-distributed, often female-led. Three: defense-adjacent and hardware founders have been quieter publicly but represent real economic activity tied to the city's military presence. Four: capital is more local than it was — multiple new VC firms have established in San Diego since 2020, complementing the historical reliance on LA and Bay Area firms.

What members say
The Founder Dinner I went to in March produced two of my best advisors and one of my best customers. That dinner alone justified five years of membership.

Frequently asked

Common questions

Is Cufflinks SD only for funded startups? add
No. We have founders at every stage from idea to Series C in the community. The Founder Dinners and Founder Office Hours work across stages. The Capital Summit skews more relevant to founders 6-24 months from a fundraise.
Are biotech founders welcome? add
Yes. We have approximately 30 active biotech founders and senior operators. Biotech-specific networking happens primarily at Biocom and JLABS; we add cross-vertical exposure plus capital connections.
Can investors attend? add
Yes. Active investors are welcome at Capital Summit, Founder Summit, and most Founder Dinners. We coordinate the founder-to-investor balance to ensure both groups get value. Pure-investor membership is available for VC partners and active angels.
How is this different from accelerator demo days? add
Accelerator demo days are point-in-time pitch events. We run a continuous community — relationships develop over months and years rather than 90-day cohorts. Many of our founder members went through accelerators (Tech.SD, Aspire Climbing, etc.) and are now in a longer-term operating community.
Do you do introductions to investors? add
Yes — for founder members at the right stage and traction. Our team makes warm intros to specific investors when the fit is real. We don't broadcast pitches to lists; we make targeted introductions. Members report higher response rates from our intros than from cold outreach.
Is there sector-specific programming? add
Yes. We coordinate with other SD-based communities (Biocom for biotech, San Diego Tech Hub for tech, others) for sector-specific events, and we run cross-vertical events ourselves. Members can choose how much sector-specific versus cross-vertical exposure they want.
What about late-stage founders running operating companies? add
Strongly represented. Many of our most active founder members are CEOs of 30-200 person companies running operating businesses. The Executive Roundtable serves them; the Founder Dinners often skew toward later-stage operators.
Can I attend before becoming a member? add
Yes. Apply for guest access to one Founder Summit or one Capital Summit before applying for membership. Most founders join after attending one of those events.
