About this community

Speaking that builds the speaker as much as it serves the audience. for speakers at san diego networking events

Speaking opportunities at Cufflinks SD events are the inverse of what most pay-to-speak conferences offer. We don't sell speaker slots — we curate them. Speakers are selected because the audience Our speakers at san diego networking events services ensure will actively benefit from their content, not because the speaker paid for visibility. The result is a speaking program that's high-quality for attendees and high-credibility for speakers.

We host roughly 25-30 speakers per year across our event lineup. Two keynote speakers at the Annual Gala. One keynote and a fireside-chat subject at the Spring Executive Summit. Three to four panelists per signature panel. Four roundtable facilitators per quarterly industry roundtable cycle. One or two featured speakers at each Founder Summit. Plus the various member-led talks and chat moderators throughout the year. Approximately 60% of speakers are members or members' connections; 40% are external speakers we recruit specifically for content fit. Honoraria are paid for keynote and fireside-chat speakers; panelists and roundtable facilitators typically aren't compensated (though travel and accommodations are covered for non-local speakers). The arrangement is straightforward: we want quality speakers, we pay for that quality where appropriate, and we don't pretend that speaking is a marketing channel for the speaker rather than a service to the audience.

Why Cufflinks SD

What we do differently.

01

Curated Rooms

Every guest list is reviewed. We protect the room — that's why decision-makers keep coming back. Quality over headcount.

02

Real Introductions

Beyond the mixer — our team makes warm intros, hosts industry roundtables, and runs the directory. Networking is the start, not the whole product.

03

San Diego Focused

Built in San Diego, for San Diego. Downtown, La Jolla, Del Mar, Coronado, Carmel Valley. We know the venues, the people, the rhythm of the city.

Deep dive

Speaking opportunities throughout the year

Annual Gala keynote (one slot, October). The most prominent speaking position in the Cufflinks SD calendar. 280 attendees, black-tie event, after-dinner timing. Past keynotes have been founders mid-IPO, CEOs of large privately-held companies, and category-defining authors. 30-minute talk plus brief Q&A. Honorarium paid; we cover travel and accommodations. The keynote slot draws strong demand; we typically book 12-18 months in advance.

Spring Executive Summit keynote (one slot, April). 160-220 senior executives, half-day format, content-driven event. The keynote anchors the day. 45-minute format including Q&A. Subject matter typically connects to current operating-environment challenges (capital, talent, technology, regulation). Honorarium paid.

Spring Executive Summit fireside chat (one slot, April). 30-minute on-stage conversation with one of our team members. Format suits speakers who prefer dialogue to monologue. Past fireside subjects have included acquired-company founders, board chairs, and notable San Diego business figures. Honorarium paid.

Summit panels (3-4 panelists per panel, multiple panels per Summit). 45-minute panels on industry-specific or cross-industry topics. Panelists are typically 30-50 minutes of content + Q&A. No honorarium; travel covered for non-local panelists.

Industry Roundtable facilitators (4 facilitators per cycle, quarterly). Member-led format. Facilitators are subject-matter experts in the industry being discussed (Real Estate, Finance, Legal, Healthcare). Roundtable runs 60-75 minutes. No honorarium; this is a member-contribution format.

Founder Summit features (1-2 speakers per quarterly summit). Founder-led case discussions or peer-talks at the quarterly Founder Summit. Format runs 20-30 minutes plus Q&A. Most speakers are members or members' connections at meaningful inflection points (recent fundraise, recent exit, recent scale challenge). No standard honorarium; case-by-case.

Capital Summit panel (annual, 4-5 investor panelists). Active investors discussing what they're funding in the current environment. Panelists are firm partners or principals at active SD-area VCs and family offices. No honorarium; this is mutually beneficial as panelists meet founders.

Topical Summit content (varies, quarterly). The Capital, Talent, Technology, and Outlook summits each have content programming with 1-2 featured speakers. Honorarium varies by speaker stature.

How we select speakers

Three criteria. One: substantive expertise the audience will actually benefit from. We're not interested in motivational talks, generic 'leadership lessons,' or recycled-content book-promotion talks. We want speakers with specific, current, useful perspective. Two: audience fit. The Cufflinks SD audience is senior — partners, executives, founders. Speaker content needs to be calibrated for that level. Three: alignment with community standards. Speakers represent us when they're on stage; we look for speakers whose conduct and values align with the community we've built. We've turned down notable potential speakers when fit wasn't there.

What members say
Speaking at the Spring Summit got me three board interviews. The audience and the room produced opportunities I couldn't have engineered.

Frequently asked

Common questions

How do I propose myself as a speaker? add
Email [email protected] with your background, the topic you'd want to address, the audience you've previously addressed, and any video samples of past talks. We review all submissions; we don't respond to every submission individually but we keep submitted speakers on file for relevant future opportunities.
Do you pay speakers? add
Keynote speakers and fireside-chat subjects: yes, honorariums based on speaker stature. Panelists and roundtable facilitators: no honorarium typically. Travel and accommodations covered for non-local speakers regardless of compensation tier.
Can I speak at multiple events per year? add
Yes — but we typically space significant speaking commitments by 6-12 months for the same speaker to avoid audience fatigue. Members may speak more frequently in member-only formats (Founder Dinners, Member-led talks) without that constraint.
What's the audience size at speaking opportunities? add
Annual Gala keynote: ~280. Spring Summit keynote/fireside: 160-220. Summit panels: 160-220. Industry Roundtables: 25-40. Founder Summit features: 60-90. Capital Summit panels: 80-120. Smaller is typical at Cufflinks SD vs major conference speaking.
Will my talk be recorded? add
Keynotes and fireside chats at signature events: typically yes, with speaker permission. Panels: occasionally. Roundtables: not recorded (Chatham House Rule). Recorded content available to members in the post-event portal; we work with speakers to share appropriate clips for their use.
Are speakers expected to be members? add
Not required. Approximately 60% of our speakers are members or members' connections. 40% are external speakers we recruit specifically. Member or non-member status doesn't affect speaker selection.
Can I speak as a sales channel for my services? add
No — that's why our speaking program isn't pay-to-speak. Talks need to be substantive content the audience benefits from, not extended sales pitches. Speakers can mention their company briefly in introduction; the body of the talk needs to deliver content.
Do you need diversity in your speaker lineup? add
Yes — actively. We track speaker demographics and ensure each year's lineup reflects the diversity of our audience and the broader San Diego business community. Approximately 45% of our speakers in recent years have been women, and we deliberately recruit speakers across racial, generational, and industry diversity.
